Abstract

Forest ecosystems play an important role in mitigating climate change, which varied topography affects the growth of vegetation. For instance in the area managed by PT. Indexim Utama Central Kalimantan has varied topography thus it is necessary to study the composition and structure of vegetation and potential carbon stocks stored.
The research was conducted in the area of primary forest and 2 years logged over area with slope of 0 – 8 % and 15 – 25 %. The object being observed is vegetation level of trees, poles, saplings, seedlings and understorey with an area of 2,56 ha. The location determined by purposive sampling method and data retrieval with a single swath.
The results showed that species found are 44 species of plants and 23 species of understorey. The estimation of carbon stocks of primary forest cover stands at saplings is 8,61 – 10,97 ton C/ha, poles from 18,22 –  19,29 ton C/ha, and trees from 55,84 –  110,39 ton C/ha, while at the saplings logged over areas of 5,70 – 7,35 ton C/ha, poles 8,71 – 9,90 ton C/ha, and trees from 27,07 – 40,85 ton C/ha. Total carbon storage in the PT. Indexim Utama, Central Kalimantan in the primary forest is 85,30 – 144,48 ton C/ha, while the estimation of logged over areas for 2 years are 46,35 – 60,10 ton C/ha where the trees had the largest percentage of carbon deposits 69,64%, followed by poles 16,69%, saplings 9,70%, seedlings 3,24% and understorey 0,73%. The largest reduction of changes in carbon stocks is primary forest and 2 years logged over area with slope class from 0 – 8 % is 67,92%, while the reduction in primary forest and 2 years logged over area with slope class from 15 – 25 % is 29,54%.
